Reflect on this teaching: If we stay present to our discomfort, we will also feel something else arising—something more real, capable, sensitive, and exquisitely aware of ourselves, and our surroundings. (The Wisdom of the Enneagram, 37)
If we stay present to our discomfort, (present meaning, identifying and allowing the emotion we’re feeling, discharging it through either crying, trembling, sweating, shaking, laughing, or yawning.) to our emotions, fear, anger, sadness, etc., we naturally move into a place of acceptance where we become, what I call, our ‘bigger self’.
Our ‘bigger self’ feels more real, more capable, sensitive, more aware of ourselves, and our surroundings. Our bigger self is the self that guides our little self, the ego self. So, if we stay present with our little self – our ego self – we learn what it is asking of us, which is to experience our feelings fully, and then, we reach a ‘bigger self’ reality.
When we’re in our ‘bigger self’ reality we feel calm, centered, aware, secure etc. The two must work together in tandem, one as important as the other, a unit, a partnership of the two forces, little ego self overseen/guided by bigger self, creates a profound wholeness, a true maturity.
